Lovely Antique Mercer Pottery Demitasse Set

This set of 6 demitasse cups and 3 saucers is from a relative's estate. She had an amazing collection of tableware that was from the last quarter 1900s thru about 1930. It is very difficult to find Mercer Pottery in this pattern*. I would suggest this for decorative and display purposes only, as it has crazing and is quite old and delicate. But it is such a rare opportunity, you shouldn't miss out!

This interesting brooch with a bail to use as a pendant was made in Mexico features a Mexican pyramid with what looks like a flame and altar at the top. Gorgeous abalone chips are inlaid in the black enamel background all surrounded in a warm silver-colored metal called Alpaca. Alpaca is a non-silver alloy (zinc, nickel, iron). Sometimes it is silverplated, however I am not sure if this piece is or not. A lovely and versatile piece!

I don't even know where to begin with this stunning late '60s/early '70s find from Aunt Lydia's Rug Yarn Collection. The title of this collection is "By the He Sea". Even more disturbing than the back-of-the-couch-afghan style "Ripple Poncho" is the borderline inappropriate "Slip Over" in white and spice. I shudder to think what he's sporting under that piece o' work.

I love escaping into my collection of vintage magazines. Reading a "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" column from the late '50s will certainly give you a little perspective on how different things were back then. Even having said that, and the fact that my mom has shared with me how things really were and, yes, watching Mad Men and seeing what woman went through in the workplace - even with all of this evidence I still think I was born a couple of decades too late. As you can see in this ad from my June 1965 Ladies Home Journal, all I needed was an electric fry pan to cure what would have ailed me as a mid-century housewife! Well, that and a valium.

Not Just For Ashes Anymore

I listed this pretty vintage ashtray yesterday. I almost didn't want to list it as an "ashtray" because it is too pretty to snuff out your cigarette in! I just can't resist picking them up; they are a reminder of a bygone era. For me they usually turn into impromptu candleholders (don't worry, this one doesn't look like it has ever been used for anything!). Especially when we have a cocktail "do" - I like to fill my aqua mosaic tile cocktail table with all sorts of mismatched ashtrays filled with candles. That reminds me...it is time for another one of those evenings ;)

Twice a year Mick schedules his work around the Maitland Library book sale. Thanks to our, let us say, "unusual" tastes he is always able to come across some brilliant stuff that the mainstream book buyers/sellers push aside. This sale was no different. Not a huge haul, but a quality one none-the-less. One of my favorites is a little sewing/craft booklet from 1976 called "Decorating Ideas With Gingham & Calico". I may end up listing it in my etsy shop, but honestly I'm still too attached. This thing is a treasure trove of crazy ass patterned material and ric rac. Quite simply it would inspire even Amy Sedaris, the Queen of the Gingham & Calico Clusterf@#k! If you are like me and have read (AND LOVE) Ms Sedaris' book "I Like You", you will certainly see where a booklet like this would have inspired a young Amy to share her secrets with today's would-be hostesses. Here's a little tease for you (more to follow) and eventually I may be able to part with it.
